The City Hall is the main building of every European town or city, which is granted governing autonomy - the so-called Magdeburg Law. The City Hal is considered the point of gravity, around which the whole organism of the city is organized in concentric circles - Market Square with the main streets, which lead from every angle of it, the churches, and the suburbs.
Ivano-FrankivskCity Hall is phenomenal in two dimensions. Firstly, the modern building of the City Hall is the only City Hall in Ukraine, designed and built in constructivist style, typical and fashionable at the beginning of 30's of the 20th century. Secondly, the present-day City Hall, already the forth in a row, was built on the same site. All of the previous City Halls of Stanyslaviv were also erected on the same foundations and had the very same cellars and tunnels.
The history of Stanyslaviv City Halls is the best illustration of periodic ups and downs, which the city had undergone.
The first City Hall was made of wood in 1666. The city council and the court resided here according to its purpose. The tower was an observation point in fortress, whereas the dungeons served as storage facilities for weapons and ammunition. In a couple of years, some of the walls were partially reconstructed with stone (1672-1677). In 1695, a new magnificent multistorey City Hall with a clock and a tall tower was built. The cellars of the City Hall served as the town prison. In 1825 a huge storm damaged the vane of the tower, and in 1868 a great fire burnt down the City Hall, as well as the majority of the houses in Market Square. The next City Hail was damaged by cannon bombardment during World War I.
It was not until 1928 that the city started constructing a new modern City Hall, which was Law finished in 1935. However, the city authorities had not worked a single day in the City Hall (the only time when the City Hall executed its official function was on the 7th of May, 1999, when the city council convened there to adopt the statute of the city - one of the first statutes in Ukraine). The old town definitely benefits from the impressive City Hall, which makes it look bigger. Nowadays a greater part of the City Hall is occupied by RegionalHistoryMuseum. Underneath the City Hall there are some tunnels, which - according to the legend - lead beyond the city, but nobody has really explored them yet...
